When B.K.S. Iyengar published his seminal work, Light on Yoga, in 1966, he established the modern-day standards for Hatha yoga. The book's glossary of physical conditions with corresponding poses also set the groundwork for therapeutic applications. He has continued his research and published many works on his findings. He has given his blessings to several books on therapeutic uses of yoga. The results of Dr. Geeta Iyengar's therapeutic work appear in her book Yoga: A Gem for Women and in texts by certified senior Iyengar Yoga teachers.

Props

A prop may be any device that serves a student in a pose. Props assist students in several ways: by teaching an action, by making a pose accessible, or by providing support. Many are commonplace items such as walls, chairs, straps or blankets. Over time, however, specialized props have become available, including blocks, wedges, wall ropes, halasana boxes and backbenders.
